What to expect from a goldendoodle?

Intelligence Both standard poodles and golden retrievers are often rated in the top 5 intelligent dogs. While this means that your goldendoodle may learn fast, he or she must also be given activities to work their brains. Goldendoodles need interaction with their humans on a regular basis and do not do well left alone in a yard or house for long periods of time. Please exercise your goldendoodle's mind with obedience training and play time. A 30-minute game of retrieval is our poodle's favorite thing! A bored goldendoodle can lead to destructive behavior that can be very frustrating to his humans. We give our dogs daily exercise, play and human interaction. Yours will not be happy without the same. A basic obedience class with your puppy is very important. This will help to teach you how to stimulate the mind of your new family member. Physical Exercise Goldendoodles are all retriever and they require daily exercise. Our dogs enjoy a playful romp in the back yard daily, a walk through town three or more times a week and the occasional run through the fields at my in-laws home. It helps to mix up the exercise as this also helps with the working of their minds. Most goldendoodles can be couch potatoes around the house but for good health they need to get daily exercise. While it is important for your adult goldendoodle to get regular exercise, it is equally important for your puppy to be allowed free play time outside but not be taken on long walks or other activities that can cause stress on their developing joints. During your first vet visit ask your doctor what activities are off limits for a large breed puppy. We do not take our dogs on long walks of a repetitive nature, allow them to climb stairs repetitively or jump excessively before the age of 1 year. We want our dogs to be a part of your family and day-to-day life.

Grooming A goldendoodles coat can vary from a flatter coat with some wave like a golden to a curly coat like a poodle. Most goldendoodles have a coat that is wavy in nature and requires some grooming. It is impossible to predict the exact type of coat or amount of grooming your goldendoodle might require when they are still a puppy. Some doodles have hair in their ears that must be plucked or trimmed like a standard poodle. CLICK HERE to see my recomended guide for ear care. All dogs require regular nail trimming that your vet can demonstrate during your puppy visit. Be prepared for a minimum of a weekly brushing, monthly trimming of the coat and an occasional bath. Our contract states that we will not guarantee any of our dogs coats to be shed or allergy free.

A long life Goldendoodles live an average of 15 years and will require regular vet visits and a good diet along with exercise and love to be healthy during those years. We feed our dogs Innova Evo and Petcurean. These are high quality dog foods that provides the correct diet for our canine companions. It is easier to invest a small amount of money in a high quality dog food then a large amount of money in a sick animal. The Whole Dog Journal puts out a list of recommended dog foods every year. Poor nutrition can cause many health problems and being overweight is a high risk factor for hip dysplasia. Do not allow your goldendoodle to become over weight and provide a well balanced diet. We stay on top of food changes in the industry and adjust what we are feeding our dogs and puppies accordingly,
